Iran’s National Steel Bridge Competitions

These competitions are held annually by Iranian Steel Structures Association in Tehran at an educational center, with teams from universities all around the country participating.

In this competition, teams must start designing and building their bridges according to the regulations provided to the teams a few months prior. On the competition day, they assemble their bridges and load-test them.

The First Edition of Iran's Steel Bridge Competition

The first edition of the National Steel Bridge Competition of Iran was held with the aim of developing practical civil engineering education and creating a platform to enhance skills in designing and constructing steel structures. In this edition, participating teams used theoretical knowledge to design and build lightweight, durable, and executable bridges, which were evaluated under real conditions. The main focus of the competition was to balance factors such as weight, construction time, stiffness, and structural efficiency; an approach that also shaped the initial evaluation framework in later editions.
In the results section, for the indicator of " Lightest Bridge ", the team from Islamic Azad University, Karaj Branch secured first place with the lowest weight, followed by Science and Culture University and Qom University in second and third places respectively; in the " Assembly Time " indicator, the team from Islamic Azad University, Rudehen Branch ranked first with the fastest assembly time, followed by teams from Islamic Azad University branches of Tabriz and Karaj; for the " Stiffest Bridge " indicator, Khajeh Nasir Toosi University took first place, with Semnan University and Islamic Azad University, Parand Branch ranking second and third; also in the " Most Efficient Bridge (Cs) " indicator, the team from Khajeh Nasir Toosi University obtained first place, with Semnan University and Islamic Azad University, Tabriz Branch in second and third places respectively.
The results of this edition reflected the teams' efforts to balance different design criteria including weight reduction, stiffness increase, improved construction speed, and enhanced structural efficiency. Despite the relatively simple evaluation structure compared to later editions, this competition was able to establish an effective framework for multi-criteria structural performance assessment.
Overall, this edition can be considered the starting point for forming a systematic approach to practical evaluation of steel structures at the student level; an approach that gradually evolved in subsequent editions by adding economic, architectural, and technical documentation indicators, reaching the current maturity of the competitions.

The Second Edition of Iran's Steel Bridge Competition

The second edition of the National Steel Bridge Competition of Iran was held with a focus on improving design quality, precision in structural analysis, and enhancement of the construction process, with participating teams joining the competition with greater preparation and experience.
In this edition, the evaluation criteria were defined with greater emphasis on the real performance of structures under loading conditions, and teams attempted to achieve more accurate results by simultaneously optimizing weight, load‑bearing capacity, stability, and construction quality. Attention to execution details, especially in the design and implementation of connections, played a significant role in the success of the teams.
In the results section, Semnan University won first place in the " Stiffest Bridge " category, followed by Islamic Azad University, Aligudarz Branch and Yazd in the next ranks. In the " Most Economic Bridge " category, Islamic Azad University, Yazd Branch had the best performance, followed by Tabriz Branch and Marand Branch. Also, in the " Most Efficient Bridge " indicator, Islamic Azad University, Tabriz Branch ranked first, and Iran University of Science and Technology and Qom University took the next positions.
From a scientific perspective, the bridges presented by Iran University of Science and Technology and Islamic Azad University, Damavand Branch were recognized as the best designs in terms of the calculation booklet .
In the Architecture section, Iran University of Science and Technology, Islamic Azad University, Tabriz Branch, and Qom University ranked first to third respectively.
The increased level of competition, diversity of evaluation indicators, and active participation from various universities highlighted the qualitative growth of this event and strengthened its position as one of the most important and influential competitions in the field of structural engineering education in the country.

The Third Edition of Iran's Steel Bridge Competition

The third edition of the National Steel Bridge Competition of Iran was held with the approach of fostering creativity in design and enhancing precision in structural analysis. Leveraging experiences from prior editions, teams presented more optimized and accurate designs. The focus of this edition was balancing indicators such as weight, deflection, construction time, and efficiency, with innovation in load-bearing systems, improved connections, and construction accuracy considered outstanding features.
In the results section, for the " Time " indicator, the team from Shahid Rajaee Teacher Training University secured first place, followed by teams from Islamic Azad University, Karaj Branch, Aligudarz, Yazd, and Kashan. For the " Weight " indicator, Islamic Azad University, Karaj Branch took first place, followed by Ilkhchi Branch, Shahid Rajaee Teacher Training University, Kashan and Tehran Central Branches (jointly), and Yazd in subsequent ranks.
In the " Deflection " indicator, Islamic Azad University, Yazd Branch performed best, followed by Tehran Central Branch, Karaj, Aligudarz, and Ilkhchi Branch. Also, in the " Most Efficient Bridge " category, Islamic Azad University, Karaj Branch secured first place, with teams from Islamic Azad University, Tehran Central Branch, Ilkhchi, Yazd, and Kashan following.
In the " Stiffest Bridge " category, Islamic Azad University, Karaj Branch ranked first, followed by Yazd Branch, Kashan, Aligudarz, and Tehran Central Branch.
Overall, Islamic Azad University, Karaj Branch was recognized as the top team, with Yazd, Kashan, Aligudarz, and Tehran Central Branch ranking second to fifth respectively. Additionally, in the architecture section, Islamic Azad University, Karaj Branch and Kashan teams jointly took first place, with Ilkhchi Branch following. In the Calculation Booklet section, Islamic Azad University, Tehran Central Branch and Karaj Branch took first and second places respectively.
The variety of evaluation indicators, close competition among teams, and presentation of precise and engineered designs made this edition one of the most comprehensive and professional, playing a significant role in advancing the scientific and practical level of participants.

The fourth edition of the National Steel Bridge Competition of Iran was held with an emphasis on optimizing structural and execution performance. Besides ensuring adequate strength, teams also focused on construction accuracy, execution quality, and assembly speed. Evaluations in this edition included criteria such as displacement (stiffness), efficiency, economy, calculation booklet, and architecture.
In the " Stiffness " category, the team from Imam Khomeini International University took first place, followed by Islamic Azad University, Tehran Central Branch, Jundi Shapur University of Technology, and Kashan University in subsequent ranks. In the " Calculation Booklet " section, Islamic Azad University, Tehran Central Branch and Jundi Shapur University of Technology jointly achieved first place, with Kashan University in third place.
In the " Architecture " section, Islamic Azad University, Tehran Central Branch ranked first, followed by teams from Jundi Shapur University of Technology, Islamic Azad University, Lahijan Branch, Imam Khomeini International University, and Kashan University respectively.
In the " Efficiency (Cs) " category, the team from Jundi Shapur University of Technology took first place, followed by teams from Kashan University, Imam Khomeini International University, and Islamic Azad University, Tehran Central Branch. In the " Economy (Cc) " category, Kashan University secured first place, with teams from Jundi Shapur University of Technology, Imam Khomeini International University, and Islamic Azad University, Tehran Central Branch following.
In the final summary and combined indicator of " Efficiency and Economy (Cc+Cs) ", Kashan University was recognized as the top team, with teams from Jundi Shapur University of Technology, Imam Khomeini International University, and Islamic Azad University, Tehran Central Branch ranked second to fourth respectively.
The variety of evaluation indicators and close competition among teams made this edition one of the important chapters in the technical maturity and professional advancement of the competition.

The Fifth Edition of Iran's Steel Bridge Competition

The fifth edition of Iran's National Steel Bridge Competition was held with the aim of increasing design accuracy, improving construction quality, and achieving optimal performance. Teams endeavored to establish a suitable balance between weight, stiffness, cost, and efficiency of their structures; evaluations were conducted on indicators such as stiffness (displacement), efficiency (Cs), economy (Cc), combined efficiency and economy (Cc+Cs), calculation booklet, and visual architecture, indicating higher technical maturity of the teams and more precise attention to all aspects of design and execution.
In the " Stiffness " category, the Qom University team achieved first place by recording the lowest displacement, followed by

Islamic Azad University, Aligudarz Branch and University of Science and Culture placed in the following positions.
In the " Calculation Booklet " category, University of Science and Culture was recognized as the top team, followed by Imam Khomeini International University and Islamic Azad University, Aligudarz Branch in subsequent ranks. In the " Visual Architecture " category, University of Science and Culture also succeeded in gaining first place.
In the " Efficiency (Cs) " indicator, Islamic Azad University, Aligudarz Branch achieved first place, and teams from Universities of Science and Culture, Qom, and Shahid Rajaee Teacher Training University respectively ranked next. In the " Economy (Cc) " category, Shahid Rajaee Teacher Training University demonstrated superior performance, followed by Islamic Azad University, Aligudarz Branch, Qom University, and Science and Culture.
The variety of evaluation indicators, close competition among teams, and presentation of precise and engineered designs made this edition one of the most complete and professional rounds of the competitions, playing an important role in raising the scientific and practical level of the participants. In the final summary and combined indicator " Efficiency and Economy (Cc+Cs) ", Islamic Azad University, Aligudarz Branch was introduced as the top team of this edition, and the teams from Universities of Science and Culture, Qom, and Shahid Rajaee Teacher Training University respectively placed thereafter.
The results of this edition demonstrate the movement of the competitions toward more precise and multi-criteria evaluations, paying simultaneous attention to the technical, economic, and executive aspects.

Sixth Edition of Iran's National Steel Bridge Competition

The sixth edition of Iran's National Steel Bridge Competition was held with emphasis on integrating engineering analysis, optimizing structural performance, and simultaneous attention to economic and executive indicators. In this edition, teams utilized experiences from previous rounds and adopted a more precise approach in design and construction, seeking to deliver balanced and optimized performance across all evaluation criteria.
In this edition, evaluations were conducted on indicators such as " Efficiency (Cs) ", " Economy (Cc) ", " Combined Efficiency and Economy (Cc+Cs) ", and " Calculation Booklet ", and the results demonstrated intense competition and high preparedness levels among participating teams.
In the " Most Efficient Bridge (Cs) " indicator, Semnan University achieved first place, followed by Qom University and Shahid Beheshti University in second and third positions respectively. In the " Most Economic Bridge (Cc) " category, Qom University won first place, and teams from Semnan University and Shahid Beheshti University ranked in subsequent positions.
In the final summary and combined indicator " Efficiency and Economy (Cc+Cs) ", Qom University was recognized as the top team of this edition, and the teams from Semnan University and Shahid Beheshti University respectively secured second and third places. These results reflect the balanced and successful performance of this team in combining technical and economic criteria.
The focus of this edition on multi-criteria evaluations and approaching real conditions of design and structural execution made the competition level more professional and allowed teams to gain a more comprehensive perspective of the process from design to construction of steel structures.

The seventh edition of Iran’s National Steel Bridge Competition was held with an emphasis on multi-criteria evaluation and simultaneous assessment of structural performance, economic efficiency, and documentation quality. In this round, teams adopted a more professional approach, aiming to create an effective balance among various indicators of design, construction, and structural analysis.
In the " Most Efficient Bridge " indicator, Islamic Azad University, Urmia Branch achieved first place, and Amirkabir University of Technology ranked second. Additionally, Islamic Azad University, Aligudarz Branch also delivered a notable performance and was among the top teams in this category.
In the " Most Economic Bridge " category, Imam Khomeini International University secured first place, and the cost-optimization performance of this team was praised. In the same category, Amirkabir University of Technology also ranked second, marking it as one of the successful teams in this section.
In the " Calculation Booklet " evaluation, Amirkabir University of Technology achieved first place, and Iran University of Science and Technology ranked second. Furthermore, Islamic Azad University, Aligudarz Branch was also among the top teams in this category, reflecting the high quality of its technical documentation and analysis.
In the " Best Overall Bridge " category, Amirkabir University of Technology was introduced as the first-place team, followed by Islamic Azad University, Aligudarz Branch in second place and Iran University of Science and Technology in third. These results highlight the balanced performance of these teams in combining multiple evaluation criteria.
The results of this edition reflect the competition’s movement toward more precise, multi-dimensional evaluations and closer alignment with real-world design and construction conditions for steel structures—an approach that has played a significant role in enhancing students’ practical skills and engineering perspectives.
